Ondertussen: Stephanie Pan, Barbara Ellison and Stelios Manousakis

In December 2009 and January 2010 Stephanie Pan, Barbara Ellison and Stelios Manousakis set out on a three-week journey to Iqaluit, Nunavut in Canada. Their aim was to work with - and learn from - the local female Inuit throat singers, to experience this art form first hand and to get to know the Inuit community.

For the Inuit people themselves throat (or overtone) singing is not an art form, but more like a game. Usually this game is played by two women, but the lineup can be extended to four or five players.

During her stay in Iqaluit, Stephanie Pan was taught the fundamental techniques of throat singing by two sixteen-year-old girls, Crystal Mullin and Sandra Ikkidluak. The willingness of the Inuit girls to share their traditional vocal technique with a complete stranger left a lasting impression on Stephanie, Barbara and Stelios.

The journey resulted in an impressive amount of both audio and visual material. A selection is presented in the Ondertussen space. A multi-media performance installation based on the material is currently in development.

Ondertussen
The former reception area of Stroom has been converted into a small exhibition space. On a regular basis there are presentations of artists who have received a subsidy in the categories Stroom PRO- and SPOT-grants. The informal exhibitions and presentations are intended to illustrate the diversity of the Stroom grant system. The program in the space is called Ondertussen (Meanwhile).
